Night Strategic Bombing
« on: September 05, 2007, 01:27:11 PM »
Greetings!

Had an idea to bounce around with you all:  Night Strategic Bombing.
To wit:
1.  Heavy Bombers fly at night and bomb at a 1d3;
2.  AAA fires only at 1-2 bomber(s);
3.  Heavy Fighters (twin engined--costing 5,5--with Air2Air combat factor rating of 2) have to be used to combat them.
4.  Hvy. Bmbrs. still get to roll a 1 for defence;
5.  and a special chip (black or white or whatever different color than the ones used have) is used to note if your bombers are going in daylight or at night.

Any thoughts?

Nice concept. Just remember, we're trying to keep the rules simple so it can be played in 1 day. Let's do a what if here. Let's say the British do a night bombing and go back to the LONDON territory.  The Germans decide to bomb the London territory with Stukas the following turn during a daylight raid. Since the bombers were used last night, they can't fight nor can they retreat. Therefore, the Stukas should have an automatic hit if it got through the AA & any British fighters.  Catching enemy aircraft on the ground was always better than an aerial dogfight. You could also do something similar to the attacks on ships to see if the  hit was critical or not by having a die roll done to see if the aircraft was destroyed or damaged by having a 1-4 as destroyed with a 5 or 6 having that aircraft placed back on the production chart where you have to spend 1 turn of production to repair it just like a damaged ship. We can keep adding additional what ifs all we want and that will start bogging the game down.

We actually encourage players to come up with rules, afterall that is where ideas are born. You should try your rules out with your group and tweak them if needed. If they add flavor to the game, without slowing down play too much, let us know!

Instead of creating a new German night-fighter unit - could you just use German bombers to combat a night bombing attack?  I thought a lot of the German night-fighters were like converted Ju-88s and stuff were'nt they?

I welcome ideas that help out the strategic bombing rules a bit.  Someone else suggested heavy bombers taking two hits to kill too (first hit returns them) - but that may make them a little too tough. . .not sure

A small percentage of the damaged bombers did make it back. So rolling the dice could be an option to see if it makes it back to its starting point after it's been hit. If so, one needs to spend the 5 production points to put it back into commission. Cannibalization of 1 aircraft to keep others flying in combat is still done today by aircraft maintainers. So this could be an optional rule.
