Summer 1940

The Germans surprise the British with a well timed and executed invasion of Oslo and reinforce it with enough strength to prevent the British from choosing to land and help Norway.  Italian submarines join the U-boat fleet in the Bay of Biscay.  Jealous of German success, Italy declares war on the Allies, but Wavell launching a lighting campaign across Libya and isolates the Italian army at Tobruk.  In the Far East, the Japanese continue their northern offensive and the Chinese fall back on Chunking in disarray.  The Japanese have prioritized building up their industry with a constant flow of factories in their production pipeline.

Spring 1940

The Germans got the initiative and successfully launched a coup de grace directly at Paris.  While army casualties were light, the German Luftwaffe lost 3 me109 units and an me110 in air to air combat for the loss of 2 British fighters.  The Germans also lost a Stuka unit to air to air combat over Paris. Despite the air losses, France falls and the BEF withdraws to England. British ASW is also very successful in stopping the U-boat menace, sinking a couple of U-boat units in the Spring of 1940.

In the Med, the Italian air force successfully sinks the Greek transport and a shoestring invasion of Crete succeeds - Glory for the Italians!

The Japanese continue to mass for their big summer 1940 campaign against the Chinese, being content with industrial terror bombing several cities.

The Axis were very aggressive in the Winter of 1939, declaring war on both the Netherlands and Belgium and attacking all three Holland, Flanders, and Ardennes territories.  Due to the Winter conditions and French/BEF reinforcements into Flanders, only the Ardennes attack was successful.  The Germans continued their aggressive attack by launching a Winter mechanized attack into France which took them to the gates of Paris.  Some significant infantry casualties in Flanders and Holland were taken, but the Germans only suffered a panzergrenadier loss or two with their blitzkrieg through the Ardennes.

In the Med, the Italians declared war on Greece, but Greek AA drove Italian bombers away from the ships in port at Athens. Italian units mass on the French border, which keeps the French army honest in the South. In the Pacific, the Japanese mass for a successful invasion of Honan and the Chinese army retreats toward Chunking.

German armor rumbled across the Polish border on September 1st 1939 on their 3 chit.  The Germans opted to only pin the Polish armies around Poznan and Danzig and send their major armored thrust into Krakow under Hoepner.  The Germans also drew their 0 chit before the allies and attacked Warsaw directly from East Prussia with their infantry army there.  The German pocket battleship was able to escape the British in the South Atlantic and German subs took refuge in the Baltic sea to avoid unfavorable ASW on turn 1.  Here is the situation at the end of turn 1 with Polish resistance pockets still waiting to be mopped up in Western Poland, the German fleet concentrated in the North Sea ports, and the German army massing in the Rhineland.

First Edition Game / Re: Game starts 1940?
« on: July 06, 2018, 01:24:09 AM »
We have not made a 1940 start scenario - just the 1939 start and a Spring 1941 start scenario.  I don't think we will put together a 1940 start as the first couple turns go pretty quick anyway, so it would not really save much time and most folks like to plan their own first couple turns of strategy.  Have been thinking about a Spring 1943 start for players that want to focus on playing the late game - that would be pre-Kursk and pre-Sicily and would be an interesting later war starting point.

Had a great game at ConSimWorld 2018 this year - thanks to all that attended and played!
We played a BIG Worldwide game from Monday to Thursday with eight players.  They are (from left to right):
Mark (Russia), Bill (British Europe), Matt (US Europe), Wolf (Japan), Ron (Axis Eastern Europe), George (Axis Western Europe), Reinhold (Allies Pacific), & Dave (US Pacific).

Started a WW 1939 game on Monday morning and played until the Summer 1944 turn Thursday afternoon.  The game was too close to call, but we had to pack it up and had to call it a draw.  Two or three more turns would have decided it - was a close game in both theaters!

First Edition Game / Re: Future Plans for 1st Edition Game

I like the ideas -  Hope you get some players at GenCon!  Tweaks are always welcome (we have been tweaking the game for like 15 years. . . ).  I think many of them are similar to what we did to the second edition map.

I don't understand the change in the English Channel. . .what was done there and what does the dash line represent?

The increased distance for some of the sea zones makes sense.

cheers,
Mark

General Discussion / Re: Revisiting the game after a longer break

Hey, Darkman -

We have been playtesting some new naval rules that the guys are talking about above for about a year.  They are not written into the main rules yet as we are still messing with them a bit. . . but overall I think it makes the naval aspects of the game much better.  We are going to play another full game here at the end of the month (Nov 4-7).  If all goes well, I'll update the rules with the new naval rules and make sure you have the new counter sheets.

The intent was for it to happen every turn to help force the Japanese to go to war.  The economic 'attack' represents oil and steel embargo to Japan and its impact on Japan's war production.

RULES (UPDATED APRIL 2018) / Re: Rulebook July 2016
« on: November 04, 2016, 10:44:55 AM »
We were seeing too much flexibility for transport planes to move all infantry.  Historically, mountain units and para units had lighter equipment (pack artillery) and were the ones that were often air transported (not regular divisions with their heavier artillery and other heavier auxilery units).  for example, the Germans planned air landed a mountain division in Crete once the paratroopers secured the airfields. . .So, historically, it makes sense to limit this to mountain and para units  - and it also limits the flexibility of transport planes.

Rules Questions & Clarifications / Re: French AT guns
« on: October 01, 2016, 02:32:54 PM »
Yes - agree - it also simulates the desert war much better as well - with the British trying to fight tanks with tanks rather than trying to defend with 88s as the Germans can.

Right - no French AT Guns (The British and Italians can not build AT gun units until later in the game as well).  This is to show that these early war nationalities did not really have large or effective AT formations to counter tanks
