General Discussion / ConsimWorld Expo 2015 - June 20-26
« on: January 19, 2015, 01:21:53 PM »
Wondering if we can get 4-5 folks together to come to ConsimWorld Expo 2015 in Phoenix, AZ, June 20-26 this Summer. . . I am thinking of playing perhaps registering the game to play Saturday through Wednesday (June 20-24) which should give us plenty of time to play a full 1939 game. . .

If we can get 4 people to sign up, I'll register it.  Here is a link to the con: http://expo.consimworld.com/

After Action Reports / Playtesting / JohnCon 2014 - After Action PbP
« on: October 14, 2014, 07:06:46 AM »
Had a great weekend at John's where a group of folks got to together to play a 1939 Europe game.  We started Friday around 11am and played through until Sunday around 5pm.  All told - about 38 hours of hardcore gaming!  Different folks came in and out to take over parts of theaters, but there was a core group of 3-4 that played through from start to finish.

Allies consisted of John (all), Bryan (all), Mikie (Sun).  Axis consisted of Mark (all), Jeff (Fri), Chris (Sat night) and Joe (Sun).

Here are some pics before all the carnage started. . .All quiet after the set-up Friday morning. . .

OK - have been recovering from ConsimWorld and am finally getting into the pictures we took and formatting them to be posted.
We had a great time in Phoenix - what a great con - I really recommend it to anyone who is into monster multi-day games. . .it is a great environment.  I will try and go back next year.

On to the game recap!  Things started as they usually do. . .in Autumn 1939. . .
The BEF landed in Normandy to keep the transports well out of the range of German aircraft.  The French started extending the Maginot line into Champagne and the Germans began redeploying their best leaders and units to the Western Front.  Poland fell with more of a wimper than a bang - minimal German casualties this time as I guess the Poles were caught unawares. . .

After Action Reports / Playtesting / Dec-Jan 2014 Game in CT

John and I are having another go at it over the Holidays!  We started a new 1939 game before Christmas and will be finishing it after New Years.  We've played the first 10 turns and are ready for Spring 1942 when we get back together.  John is the Axis and I am the Allies.

France hung on until Summer 1940 - which threw off some of John's plans... But, this was partly due to an early redeployment of German troops to the Mediterranean in the Winter of 1939. The British were not able to reinforce Egypt fast enough to prevent the Axis from taking Alexandria and Cairo by Autumn 1940 and triggering Vichy Syria and Iraq.

The German u-boat offensive did not get off to a strong start and the British were very successful in breaking the German naval codes (aka lucky dice) and eliminating much of the u-boat threat by the end of 1940.

Due to the late defeat of France and the heavy early commitment in the Med, the Germans did not launch Barbarossa until the Summer of 1941 (John likes to go in during the Spring turn to maximize damage before the first Russian Winter and their good leaders enter). The invasion of Russia, however, coincided with the fall of Greece  - and with Egypt firmly in Axis hands, led to a Turkish declaration of war against the Allies (Yikes!  Been a while since that happened last. . .).  By the end of 1941, pressure from both the Germans as well as the Turks have pushed the Russians back deep to the gates of Leningrad, Moscow and Rostov - and fighting on the Southern Front against the Turks in the Caucasus.  A successful Winter counter-offensive led by my Siberians just staved off Leningrad from being encircled by German panzer troops - but, my Russians are still in a very tight spot.

The Germans withdrew most of their air power from the Med in 1941 end sent it to Russia as well as nearly all of their reinforcements. The redeployment of the Axis forces enabled the British to launch a counteroffensive and drive the Germans out of the Middle-East and retake Cairo.  Slim was able to defeat Rommel in Palestine, but the Germans have regrouped and entrenched at Alexandria.

So - this is where things stand at the end of 1941. . .the Soviets are on the ropes, but the British are counterattacking in the Middle-East and have managed the u-boat threat... AND the Americans are now in the war!  We are hoping to finish next week!

Will take pics this time - but here are how things stand at the end of Winter 1941

After Action Reports / Playtesting / November 2013 Game in CT
« on: November 17, 2013, 09:38:50 AM »
Well, no Patriots game last weekend - so we spent two days playing a 1939 Struggle for Europe game!  We played about 16 turns and got to near the end of the Summer 1943 turn.  The Allies have done their non-combat move, but the Axis still need to do their non-combat move and we will be ready for Autumn 1943.

We plan to finish the game the weekend of December 7th!  I am the Allies along with Joe.  John and Craig are the Axis.

The game had a rough start for the Axis - Poland was very tough nut to crack with Polish units hitting on most of their defensive rolls and inflicting significant casualties on the German invaders.  The Axis shrugged off their losses and managed to take France out in the WINTER 1939-40 turn which made up for some of the Polish debacle!  Only John has managed to do this France in two turns maneuver. . .and he has done it twice now (If the movement chits fall just right and the Germans shift significant strength out of the gates to the Western Front, it is possible).

The British managed to deal with the battle of Atlantic fairly well.  Some lucky ASW rolls and the diversion of German production to make up the ir Polish losses rather than building a lot of u-boats helped.

There was some good back-and-forth in the Med with the British successfully defending Egypt and driving Rommel back in 1942.  The Allies invaded Algeria in Summer 1942 and were able to drive the Axis off the continent by the end of the year.

In Russia, Barbarossa was launched in Spring 1941.  As usual it was bloody for the Russians, but they were able to regroup and hold onto Leningrad and Moscow.  It actually played out close to historical lines in the Soviet Union for much of the game up until now.  Rather than a Stalingrad disaster however, instead of Paulus, it was Manstein that was surrounded with his army near Novgorod - we will call it the Demyansk pocket realized.  In Spring/Summer 1943, the Germans launched a last desperate offensive in the South and are driving on Stalingrad.  Simultaneously, the Soviets launched an offensive in the North, temporarily cutting off Model's army facing Leningrad and liberating Minsk.

Rather than invading a very well defended Italy in Spring 1943, the Allies redeployed and just launched a successful invasion of Normandy in Summer 1943 - led by Montgomery and Patton.  Kesselring is rallying the German defenses in France while the Germans rail reinforcements to the West. . .

Here are some pics as things stand near the end of Summer 1943:

General Discussion / Some thinking on Naval Movement
« on: November 15, 2012, 10:13:56 PM »
There has been some discussion in our group that we could do a better job of modeling naval movement for the game.

Essentially, that ships should act a little bit more like planes - in that they need to "land" back at a port at the conclusion of every turn.

Also - that ships should perhaps be able to move through enemy ships, but enemy ships should get an opportunity to interdict and opportunity fire in a similar way that subs do.

Also - that perhaps planes should move on any chit draw, rather than waiting until all the movement is over, and that players should perhaps be able to move air units into sea zones to also opportunity fire at naval units that leave or pass through the sea zone.

Of course these ideas have not been tested or thought through - but I wanted to post them here to get additional smart people thinking on the topic and see if there is perhaps a better way to simulate naval movement than we currently have in the game.

thanks,
Mark

RULES (UPDATED APRIL 2018) / Updated Soviet Country Chart
« on: October 06, 2012, 05:48:00 PM »
Please find attached an updated Soviet deployment country reference sheet.  Player feedback and analysis showed the Russian 1941 set-up to be under-representative of the forces the Soviets should have available given average 1939 builds and losses leading up to Spring 1941.   Most of the additional forces have been placed in rear areas as the border set-up is based on historical unit deployments.

Some minor changes to the 1939 set-up have also been made (replaced a couple of the arctic Soviet infantry units with Winterized Soviet infantry units).

Finally getting around to posting some of the Pictures from a fantastic game at Origins in Columbus Ohio from earlier this Summer. . .we had an epic game with several new players joining for a day or two.

Here are some pics - more to come!

Overall picture of the game at start - following by the battle for France in Spring 1940.  Guderian and the German 1st Army swept through French defenses in Chmpaigne on their way to Paris. . .

Please find attached the draft rules addendum for the Pacific theater.  This is not a full rule book. It is a rules supplement that outlines the special rules that are unique to the Pacific Theater of the Struggle for Europe and Asia game system.  Please see the Struggle for Europe rulebook for the complete rules for the game system as the rules below only elaborate on the special rules specific to the Pacific Theater.

Please let me know if you have feedback edits or questions to these rules that cover national and specific rules to the Asia/Pacific theater - thanks!

Rules Questions & Clarifications / Rules questions in the Advanced Game
« on: February 09, 2012, 10:17:56 PM »
Quote
1)  Does the defender bonus for front and support of river attacks apply on every combat round? *Unless para drop.  While the attacker modifier only applies on the first round.. is it right that the defender has the bonus for the whole battle? (battle chart only has the *lasts only for 1 turn* on the attacker side.)

Both the attacker and the defender are modified for the first round of combat during river and amphibious assaults.  I'll make the change on the battleboard and make it more clear in the rules

Quote
2) Does the printed Naval AA reduced somehow if the naval unit is out of supply?

Out of supply AA die rolls are modified by +1.  This is noted on the ground battleboard, but not as clear on the naval battleboard.

Quote
2.1  Does ground AA reduced if out of supply?

Yes - noted on the battleboard.  I will make it more clear in the rules.

Quote
3) Does the printed Naval AA on the counters reduced for italy, if italy has less than 8 VP-Points?  (it is said all combat values) example: battleship down to 3 AA)

Yes - all values (including AA) reduced by 1.

Quote
4) While the Leader is not in frontline on the first combat round.. is it right that also he doesn't applies on the first round of reinforment table?  So NL for first round of landing? Right?

Yes

Quote
5)  If subs kill a carrier, is the plane also dead if it was fighting  in naval combat? or is it allowed to retreat. If it is allowed to retreat. whats the range for retreating? half range or  range?

This is a good question.  I think the ruling should be, the plane is eliminated.  The reason I say this is because sub combat (whether it is movement interdiction or at the conclusion of the battle) is happening after the battle is over, or before it begins (in the case of interdicting movement).  I think the plane should be killed.
