After action reports from first edition / Re: basic game results

Our games are more of a chess match.  As soon as one side has the upper hand, the other side withdraws and avoids an engagement, fearful of decisive dice.  Until 1945, anyway.   So 60armor in late 1944 was the result.

Do half of them roll on the attack just like regular infantry or are they treated as armor units and wait for the second round of the battle?

Also, are they treated as regular infantry for transport rules?

Finland, and the Balkan nations join the Axis the turn after France falls.  Are their units available to attack that same turn, or are those countries' units only mobilized on their activation turn?

I have told my opponent that his flaw in defending the Reich has been his reliance on Axis and Allies tactics.  He holds objectives with overwhelming numbers or pulls out.  I told him if he makes them a attainable yet expensive it makes the allies job much more precarious.   We'll see if he learns his lesson this time!

Scott has mastered the art of the blitzkrieg.  He has had trouble defending the collapse of the Reich.  He was one of the best ever in Axis and Allies.  Its only a matter of time until he masters this too.

The last game we played the Axis should have won.  But a push to hold enough objectives in spring '45 wound up being a dissaster.  60 german armor units wound up cut off from supply in Paris as bold allied counter offensives captured the needed VP's to stay in the game while moving on Berlin.

winning in spring 1945 is much more attractive than a pyhric victory of 10VP's on the final turn.  He wanted a decisive victory!  lol

Once Germany turns its luftwaffe back to the west Russia gains ground back quickly.  Russia withdraws to the Urals often times without a fight, preserving her army for the fight later.  Yes, Turkey is usually triggered.  The Istanbul objective becomes a forted down stronghold until the end.

Western Allies have obviously taken Africa and forced Italy to submit.  They usually land in France a little early, as soon as air superiority is gained.  Germans have elected to turn the entire luftwaffe against the Western allies in order to delay said landings as long as possible.  This spares the russian factories and keeps the red army pumping out tanks, which they will need to move fast enough to race to Poland, Berlin and the Balkan objectives.

Keep in mind if Germany is making this hard of a push deep into russia, very little can be spent on other fronts, so the allies are not troubled.

Our games are real chess matches.  we both play it pretty safe and don't take big risks.  Objectives are usually withdrawn from rather than fought for once an overwhelming force is at the gates.  -at least where large armies are concerned.  We play with limited airbase capacities and give Japan a factory on the "2" box to start the game.

So we've played this thing maybe 10 times now.  We've had the last 4-5 games come down to the last two turns.  Very exciting!   Holding the last 10 VP is awfully difficult for the Axis, no matter how well the game has gone for Germany.  The Allies just need to hold on and not get clobbered too badly in 1940-1942.  The most popular strategy in Europe of late has been to all but ignore Africa while building a massive Barbarossa army to siege Moscow and move south in order to activate Turkey by capturing the Caucusas.  Russia is pushed to the brink, holding at or just in front of the Urals and behind the Volga.  German airpower is immense!  Russia can not hope to go on the offensive, or even hold her ground, until the luftwaffe is redeployed to the west.   I have found it very difficult to play Russia well.

thanks for the help guys.  Once I got my hands on the rulebook again I did find that entry listed by Yoper.   So UK was able to collect 19ipc's in our game.

But here is another question:  Can Atlantic convoys be raided for 10pp's pluss lend-lease or for 30pp's plus lend lease?  We have been playing it as 10.   You could raid any of the three convoy zones for any combination up to 10.  That made the most sense to us.  Now after reading how the USA sends their lend-lease, I am not so sure.

I can't find them.  The child boards have the rules questions forum, but not the PDF link.

What happened to the link for the First Edition Rules?  Looks like it was removed.  Can we get that put back on the website?  It was nice to be able to access that when its slow at work.

No optional entry rules.  Axis have not got the game in the bad by any means either.  Japan is in check and Russia is entrenched in Romania now.

The biggest problem with Spain being Axis, is the ftrs being in range of Atlantic Convoys.  With unlimited ftr capacity there, the Allies cannot hope to protect the convoys.

So UK cannot be convoy raided below their home island value?  Where in the rules is this?  Is it an optional rule?

In our current game Germany attacked Spain to get to Gibraltar.   UK has been bombed to the tune of 15-25 damage every turn.   Its only 1942, and the Red Army is going to make him pay for the lack of focus on that front.   But wow, the UK is really neutered.

If 6 bombers are sitting in Brest, hitting the Atlantic convoys, what good are two early war aircraft?  They MIGHT shoot down a bomber per turn I suppose.   Not going to happen in this game though, as there is ftr cover for all bombing raids comming from Spain.

Right now the UK fleet is anchored in East USA protecting that convoy, as the German and Italian fleets have merged in the Atlantic.   With aircover and a couple captured French ships the Axis control the Atlantic.   It will take until 1943 to be able to challenge for control.

The whole point of this conversation is to point out how gamey it is to be able to bomb away half the UK income and basically eliminate the lend-lease option.   It is just silly that land based aircraft are able to do this.   If I have any beef with this game its the convoy box rules.

Not sure how ftrs in Portsmouth will affect the German bombers.   We have not been playing the optional rule which allows airbase attacks.  We have implemented airbase rules for the mtn/forest/desert tt's.

I am guessing that with germany controlling Brest/Brittany, the +1 to subs is reflective of Condor spotters assisting the u-boats.   The Condors never actually bombed the convoys themselves.  In struggle, Me110's are sinking $10 per turn of allied shipping, and the only method to stop it is to put the Navy in that sz and hope the AA fire hits a few.  That and the ftrs off the UK CV's.

So I guess my problem with the whole situation is that u-boats are a less attractive option to sting the UK economy.   Its more cost-effective for the Germans to bomb the convoys instead of attack them with subs.  Besides, later in the war when the US is able to protect the convoys the German planes can be deployed elsewhere.  Subs only have the one function.

Thats a big ocean out there, its kind of silly that the luftwaffe could actually do this.  They should be in range of UK interceptors, but they are not.

One thing I have found to be somewhat a gamey tactic that is very effective:  German bombers stationed in Brest(france) are in range of UK convoys.  Little can be done to effectively halt this attack.  German bombers are much more effective than subs at strategic warfare.  So I am curious, did this actually occur in WWII?  Did the germans bomb convoys from france?
