Rules questions from first edition / Re: Build airbases for buddies?
« on: November 08, 2011, 04:28:08 PM »
We let forts and airbases be built by Allies or Axis or Russians - those are the only distinctions. ... Of course - you can do as your group decides is best. Certainly forts can be built anywhere....

So if Italians build a fort and surrender, and the Germans have troops in the area, does the  Italian fort go away?

Maybe stick with -1, but you lose a unit every turn you're out of supply after that?

Finally posted a picture (thanks to my buddy's 10 year old) I'll work on putting more up.

Can German/Italian, British/American build airbases for their allies?  Specifically- can the Germans Build an airbase on Italian territory in Africa?

Game Design / Re: Axis Minors - Turkey and Spain
« on: November 24, 2010, 06:48:07 PM »
I've never been in a game where there was a successful trigger roll (the dice just hated the Axis), so I can't honestly say if it affects the game or not.  It seems like it would really suck to be Russia and then- "Whoops!!, bend over and take it from the Turks" on a lucky roll, but the economic trigger doesn't seem very effective either, though probably more realistic.  What we've decided to try is adding one to the die roll for economic triggers, and if an economic trigger is successful, it goes back to standard for a troop trigger.

General Discussion / My two cents...
« on: November 18, 2010, 07:35:01 PM »
Why is it, "My two cents", and "A penny for your thoughts?"  Hmmm...  Anyways, I love the game.  It's fairly realistic, in that with fairly matched players in a mano y mano game the Axis is usually screwed.  When there are multiple Allied players I think the Axis has more of a chance.  So one of the ideas we've been playtesting is 4 extra points on the 1 production line for Germany and Japan, and 2 extra production points for Italy when they declare war.  Subtract one of these options for every extra allied player.  Hard to say how this has played out so far, because my Axis opponent has been having an unbelievable amount of luck until recently.  About to start my Autumn '42 turn, and his damaged German cruiser is still wreacking havoc from Russia to South Africa, and has even managed to put Africa out of supply!  I think a good basic test for fairness of variant/house rules is if everyone agrees to them, then determine countries at random.

General Discussion / Re: Game pieces

"Chips for Cheap Bastards Like Me"  I have several different versions of A&A which provided me with most of the pieces I need, and I use the same size chips of different colors for different units, and other purposes.  Forts- I use a black chip as a base, then I take a brown chip and snip off 2 little pieces on the sides for a semi- rectangular top.  Actually looks pretty cool, and makes kepping track of fort damage a lot easier.  I do the same thing for an airfield- cut down white strip on top of a black disc, gray for upgraded airfields.  I use cut down green chips (they actually wind up looking a little bit like dollar bills) for lend lease.  Cut down blue chips I use to help keep track of invasion/Airborne points.  I use uncut chips for all the rest.  Orange chips for ship damage markers.  Orange chips with black circles drawn on the inside for out of supply markers.  Has a neat sort of "zero", or "oh" effect.  Like "Oh Crap!, we're out of ammo, food, and fuel."  I use a blue chip under a grunt to mark them as Airborne.  For countries that I only have one artillery piece for, I slide a green chip under to designate anti- tank.  You can use black to designate heavy armor, green for light, etc, etc.  Also, Ive found that alternating gray and white chips in a stack makes the little buggers a lot easier to count at a glance.

General Discussion / Re: CONVENTIONS

Naw, his Struggle is raising 4 kids.  He's one of those weird "non-gamer" types, but still a good buddy.  NOTE- like I said, I'm planning WAY ahead, FEB2012.  I have to try to plan financially for another disaster in my house, (I think my furnace is past due to crap out on me) as well as any future winter vacations.  I'm already doing Vegas in December this year.  I do have another buddy that I hadn't seen in years and introduced to Struggle, and we have been playing the s**t out of it for the last couple of months.  He wants to try to save up to go as well.

doc

what area of the country do you live in ?

I run games in the DFW area

thanks

I live in LA- Los Anchorage, Alaska.  Real Alaskans consider Anchorage to almost be a part of Alaska.  Diet Alaska, just one calorie, not Alaskan enough.  A good buddy of mine was from LA and moved back there, and it sounds like hotels are pretty cheap if you run a game.  So I figure I'll go down to introduce Struggle at the convention, spring for a few extra hotel days to see my buddy, and blind innocent bystanders at the beach :D

It sucks when you have to either put the game away, or not use the table for something else- but I stumbled across an alternative.  After doing some bathroom remodeling I had an almost full sheet of 1/2" plywood, and a bunch of scrap 2"x2" a little over a foot long.  I screwed 4 of the 2" along the long edge of the plywood, and one along the short edge.  Skootch in the pieces on the West coast a little bit, write down what you have on your production charts, put a piece of 2"x2" in some unoccupied territory in the middle of the map as abrace , and you're all set until the hostilities can resume at a more convenient time.  This works especially well if you have a Catzilla/Feline Assassin of Joy like I do.

I would love to see some pictures.
I was thinking about that- and as soon as I beg, borrow, steal, or buy a digi cam, and master that there tekkyknowledgeable skill I'll put the pics up.

Reviews / Best global WWII game.

Original A&A is of course, a classic.  But in my opinion this is not only the best A&A variant, but the best game that encompasses the entire war.
