Rules questions from first edition / New Airbases
« on: December 04, 2012, 08:28:13 AM »
Since a new airbase is placed AFTER all aircraft have completed their movement, is it safe to assume that you can not place any aircraft on the airbase until AFTER your turn?

Which would then mean that displaced aircraft COULD land there on your opponents turn, but before your next turn.

May a new airbase be placed on a newly captured territory?

Rules questions from first edition / Panzergrenadiers across rivers

Do half of them roll on the attack just like regular infantry or are they treated as armor units and wait for the second round of the battle?

Also, are they treated as regular infantry for transport rules?

Finland, and the Balkan nations join the Axis the turn after France falls.  Are their units available to attack that same turn, or are those countries' units only mobilized on their activation turn?

After action reports from first edition / basic game results
« on: July 18, 2012, 03:59:12 AM »
So we've played this thing maybe 10 times now.  We've had the last 4-5 games come down to the last two turns.  Very exciting!   Holding the last 10 VP is awfully difficult for the Axis, no matter how well the game has gone for Germany.  The Allies just need to hold on and not get clobbered too badly in 1940-1942.  The most popular strategy in Europe of late has been to all but ignore Africa while building a massive Barbarossa army to siege Moscow and move south in order to activate Turkey by capturing the Caucusas.  Russia is pushed to the brink, holding at or just in front of the Urals and behind the Volga.  German airpower is immense!  Russia can not hope to go on the offensive, or even hold her ground, until the luftwaffe is redeployed to the west.   I have found it very difficult to play Russia well.

General Discussion / Standard game reports....
« on: April 25, 2012, 07:19:00 AM »
ok, by now we have played about 5-6 games of struggle.  Last time I chimed in we were concerned that the Axis had little chance of making it past 1943.   I am happy to report this is no longer the case.....

We discovered that German airpower is the key.   Scott has built a HUGE luftwaffe in recent games and it has made the difference.  Western Allies save little hope to hold Paris until the autumn.   The airwing is later moved to the eastern front where Russia is picked apart and pushed back until the luftwaffe is turned back to halt the Westtern Allies in late 43 or 44.  Russia cannot even trade pickets or conduct attrition combat with such overwhelming axis air strength.  If Russia does not invest heavily on AA guns the Germans can straeff a Russian stack and easily eliminate 6-10 red units every season!

Turkey goes to the axis most of the time as well.  It is almost impossible to hold off a determined axis drive to Cairo.  The trick is to buy an Italian transport every turn and haul boatloads of whermacht forces to Mersa Matru.  With all them transports in the water the UK cannot hold both Gibraltar and Cairo.

In the Pacific we have given Japan a Factory on the "2" box on their production chart.   They need to invest for a couple of turns in order to reap the benefits which keeps them from steamrolling China, yet gives them a little more staying power once the US goes on the offensive.  Japan is so weak otherwise, so we really like this addition.

Scott thinks that Istanbul is so important for the Germans that he will attack it if Turkey does not join the Axis.  Without control of the Black Sea Russia is able to cut off Army Group South.  If the Axis want to make a drive into the southern heart of Russia, he feels this is a must.

Rules questions from first edition / support units

I understand that unsupported artillary fire at 1.  What about unsupported air and naval units?  Is that allowed?  Do they fire at 1?

General Discussion / First game of struggle last weekend....
« on: December 27, 2011, 07:13:58 AM »
The map showed up in the mail Saturday about 1pm.  It was a Chrismas miracle!  LOL.  We got it set up and went over some gameplay details and got some gaming in yesterday -about 8hrs worth.

There are a few questions I have reguarding the game balance.

1) unit placement:  Russia can effectively place 20 newly purchased units and rail 20 more to any given production center.  Holy crap!  How does Germany ever take more than one major VP city in Russia?   A good Russian player seems to be able to handle the Whermacht every time.

2) Japan has no money!  Until they DoW the Western Allies, they are stuck around 20.  They don't seem able to ever get above 40.

It has only been 1/2 a game played, but balance seems to be in the Allies favor.  By a lot.  Sure mistakes can be made and such, but really good players seldom make those kind of mistakes.

I read a bunch of after action reports today from your website.  Seems Eric wins whatever side he plays, lol.   I avoided the pitfalls that a lot of the other allied players did not in most of those games.  We acclimated to the rules awfully quickly, there were very few violations, and none which we could not quickly correct.

I guess I'd like to know if you guys agree the balance is pro-allied too.  I'm ok with that, we could easily play with some sort of a bid, like giving japan/germany/italy a free factory, extra units at start, fewer victory city requirements, etc.
