General Discussion / 2nd edition question
« on: February 20, 2015, 02:03:58 PM »
Apologies if I missed this somewhere but I couldn't find my answer in another of the other posts.

I own the 1st edition of the full game (Europe & Asia).  I was excited to see a 2nd edition and have downloaded the updated rules to take a look.  My question is how much of the materials from the 1st edition are usable with the new rule set.  Has the map been changed significantly?  Player Aid cards, Production charts, etc.  Will I need to buy the game in its entirety or is there some sort of upgrade kit?  Anyway thanks for any info you can give me and for a great game.  I have really enjoyed the game I own over the years.

Ok that is something I did not know I thought the subs had to be in a convoy zone to use the ASW chart.  Thanks for clearing that up.

another couple questions.  In the rules under Strategic combat it says subs can declare they are conducting strategic combat when they are attacked (Example 1) and use the Strategic combat sub warfare chart.  What about merchant raiders and surface ships.  If they are in a convoy zone and attacked say in this case a german BB, sub and destroyer are in north atlantic convoy zone.  They are attacked by 2 british BB and a crusier and destroyer.  Can the surface ships say they are conducting strategic combat or do they have to resolve combat through the normal naval combat table.  What about merchant raiders with their German side up.

I was thinking about this.  Pehaps their should be something to make it less likely for Italy to surrender the more German units that are in Italy.  I dont know how this would jive historically but it seems the more German forces in the country would make the Italian Facist government stronger and make it less likely that a coup would occur causing an Italian surrender as the war gos more and more badly for the Italians.  Something like for every 5 front line German units of instance the Italians could add 1 to their surrender roles.  But to balance things out a little bit make it that the Italians must still have more units in the country than the Germans..  Its an idea while maybe not historically accurate would allow the Axis player to experiement a little.

Ok here we go another round of questions or more request for clarification from my last game.

1) PP costs for amphib invasions, does this apply to every situation.  Say for example Vichy France falls, Madagascar unoccupied. If someone wanted to land a soldier there this is still considered an invasion?  I am assuming so but just want a clarification.

2) From my last game, Italy surrenders, The british occupy Sicily while the rest of the country is unoccupied because italian units are gone.  The British are allowed to take the country and add to their PP or are they conisidered Neutral and can only be occupied by the Germans and taken from them.  Also if German units are in italy when they surrender do they remain in the country or do they need to be retreated out.  I know the germans can retake it.

3) a little confusion on 88s. If allied bombers fly over a territory containing 88s can they fire at those planes during the movement phase like AA guns? or can they only be deployed as AA guns if they are in the territory being attacked.

At this point the game is over.  The Axis ended the turn with only 25 VPs.  We played another turn but I did not take pictures.  Hans still had a sizable army in Russia so we wanted to see if anything could be salvaged for them.  He played very aggressive but he was soundly defeated in Crimea with all his infantry and most of his tanks being destroyed.  At this point it was obvious that continuing any more would be useless.

While I think we both made alot of mistakes I think we both have a better understanding of the kinds of forces that are going to be needed to accomplish certain goals.

Allies 1/42

Allies bring in massive reinforcements to France.  Axis presence in Africa is eliminated.  I am still trying to keep the Russian army in defensive postions while I try to build up enough units to counterattack.

Axis 1/42  Allies 1/42

More bad news the Japs were defeated in Burma pretty much eliminating most of their available soldiers in the area.  They still have a massive fleet that is keeping the allies from launching any major operations.

The Chinese are continuing to push back the Japanese in China.  The Japanese are spread to thin to do anything about it.  Americans bring in troops to secure their VP islands in the south Pacific.  Moved alot of airpower into the region.

Axis 1/42

The Tide starts to turn for the Axis.  They were unable to counterattack the second invasion in france.  In Russia the germans attacked the Red Army at Karkov and had a disasterous result losing over half of their armor.  The Russians took heavy casulities though.  The unsecussfully counterattacked the Russian invasion of Istanbul.  Germans are getting a bit light on troops in Russia as well.
