Game Design / Re: Kamikaze planes
« on: December 18, 2015, 02:52:26 AM »
For the first edition of the game I bought a metal miniature of either the Nakajima B5N "Kate" or the Nakajima B6N "Jill" (can't tell which one it is precisely) and painted it yellow.  It stood out from the Orange plastic A&A pieces that we used for the Japanese.  And it still fit on the carriers (unlike a bomber figurine- see below).

As John correctly states, they used just about anything that they could put into the air as a Kamikaze unit.  Many of the original planes though were carrier aircraft that had been removed from the decoy sacrifice CV force during the Sho-Go attacks of the battle of Leyte Gulf when Kamikaze attacks were first employed.  Later during the Okinawa battle, the force mixture of attacking Kamikazes was of a much greater diversity.  Single and multi-engined, Army and Navy units, even the Ohka flying bomb.

I guess you could just as easily have picked a Aichi D3A "Val" or even a Mitsubishi A6M "Zeke".  Or even a variety of obsolete early war land based fighters like the Nakajima Ki-27 or army bombers like the Mitsubishi Ki-21 and Ki-67 or the Nakajima Ki-49.

Also, as an aside- many discussion groups/boards don't use the term "Jap" (or "Nip") when referencing the Japanese.  It is deemed a derogatory term on level with "nigger" when referring to blacks/African Americans or other terms like "spic", "dago", wap", "mick", etc.
What we use on the Empire of the Sun thread over on Consimworld is the abbreviation JP for Japanese or Japanese player.

It's really up to John or Mark as to whether it is a problem.  Just putting it out there for discussion.

Mark- I think that I need to fly in next time and take up the role of your chief of staff.  You need someone to keep an eye on you. ;)

There are a couple of issues with that early tower design of mine and the dice combo you are using.

The main thing is that it was really designed to work with six sided die.  But really the problem is the length of the tray.  Add that to the d12s and you have a lot of action that causes them to bounce back into the tower area.

I did do a couple of towers for my buddy Dan with a step to stop the dice from going back under the lip, but then it causes more of the dice to fly out of the tray.

The newer ones are a bit wider and a bit longer. I no longer have my buddy selling them online so I only make them sporadically.  But for you guys I would fire up the production line.

It's nice to see you are still using a Yope dice tower.

I really should send you guys a couple of the newer look towers (no dowels showing).  You've earned it.

Actually, it looks quite distinguished. :D

Rules Questions & Clarifications / Re: How triggers for minors work??
« on: June 14, 2015, 05:48:05 AM »
What this really boils down to is the fact that you didn't explain what the baseline number is without any modifiers.  There is nothing wrong with the system that you are using but as is pointed out the modifiers have no meaning if they don't have a starting point to relate to.

Also, where is the list of Minors that these modifiers apply to?  How does one know which minors are to be rolled for at the end of a turn in which one of these trigger is taken?

Having not played, I am unsure.  I take it we are only talking about Spain and Turkey since it is the Med/NA that these modifiers relate to?

At first I was wondering about the disjointed German defensive line in the East, but then I remembered the Pripet Marshes.  ;)

I'm always free (and easy!!!!). 8)

Right now we are in a bit of flux as a gaming group.  Martin is back in the fold so we are operating with four, but Dan is taking a bit of a hiatus during December and January.  Between being deluged with projects at work (CAD work for the Big Three comes in waves.) and trying to concentrate on practicing for the next step in his martial arts training, he is taking a bit of a gaming break.

We are going to continue our on-going modification work for our version of the first edition.  Our latest few outings of Eric's Fall '40 start have fallen apart with easy Sea Lion attacks blowing up the game.  A major flaw in his set up has forced us to review his thinking and we worked last night to come up with some revisions to said set up.  Also, we are looking to split the US entry system into Euro and Pac stand alone parts coupled with the UK and US having split economies for Pac and Euro boards.

Plenty of ideas being hashed through and they still need plenty of playtesting.

While I would love to have you out, we haven't put in any time towards the new version.  So it would probably a bit of a waste to try and work through that with four duffers.

But I wouldn't want to discourage any kind of gaming opportunity.  So if you want to put in the painful teaching team, I know I won't say no.  Like I said- I'm easy.
