WWII discussion forum / Re: How Hitler could have won WWII?

Hi guys...I played a few years ago at GenCon and I just bwanted to add my piece!!

I totally agree with Christoph 100%! Germany had no chance of winning the war once they invaded the USSR.  The track record of the war shows that the Nazis only defeated countries that were economically or industrially weaker than themselves. It took the USSr some time but the industrial potential they had was too great.  All the bombing the Allies did on GErmany really did not have a huge impact on their ability to produce weapons of war...in some cases, their output increased in 1943-1944.  The problem with the Nazis was that their industrial base was not designed for a long war......they were developed to produce weapons of quality, but it would take extra time to produce these., and maintainance was a bitch since the machines (especially the tanks) tended to be so complicated (but beautiful) in design.

They couldn't possibly get close to the USSR industrial base in the Urals because their bombers were not long range in design. Basically it all came down to the numbers, which the Nazis couldn't match the Soviets in.

Those vast Russin Steppes........they just gobbled the Wehrmacht up!!!

Great thanks Mark.  I was actually planning on doing what you did...acquiring the pieces over a number of years and cannabilizing in the meantime.  Hopefully I'll be ordering in a month or two.

And I would be interested in buying miniatures through you!!

Hey Mark....Chad here.  Listen, I would like to buy the game but I just don't have $1000 available for a board game (wife).  What I would like to do is get the basic game and use pieces from the various Axis and Allies games as much as possible.  For things like 88's, forts, etc, I could buy certain units. Where could these miniatures be acquired?

I figure I have a much easier chance of getting the game this way....could spray paint A&A pieces.

Hey Imperious.....

I was doing pretty good with Germany.  Had USSR pushed back pretty quickly.  Had trouble with the "death blow" in the Urals though.  Italy rolled a "1" and left the war, which put a sudden burden on my airforce.  German airforce was largely wiped out in a defensive attempt to destroy or push out the British fleet.

Japan slowly but surely began to lose ground to the Americans and although we still held a good amount of Victory points in 1944-45, we were surely losing ground everywhere.  We were constantly trying to hold on and win with the decreasing victory conditions but in the end, after about 13.5 hours we were tired.  Marty and I agreed that we probably could not win as the Allies just kept getting that one extra Victory point they needed every turn (points we usually could not get back (like in the Pacific).  We offered an armistice(as the Germans would like to call it) but the American player demanded I word it as a complete surrender.  USSr and Britain were also willing to accept our surrender.  So we said "WE GIVE UP...WE SURRENDER" but we were totally prepared not to take away the Allies' glory of a victory(we were willing to continue if they wanted us to).

It was so much fun...I never enjoyed a war game as I did this one.  The really cool part about the game is that if you don't finish the job, it will come back and knock you out later (as it did to us).  We thought we had the game wrapped up and BOOM, we were sitting on our butts soon enough.

Truly AWESOME Mark!!

Game Design / you said to offer any suggestions
« on: August 21, 2005, 05:51:39 PM »
Hi Mark, Chad again(see earlier post) from Gen Con.  Absolutely no problems with the game but you did say you welcome any suggestions.  This suggestion has nothing to do with any game mechanics:

I found that as the game reached the later stages of the game where victory points were constantly being checked, we had so many units on some locations that they spilled out into other areas or covered all writing on that location (even using chips).  What about using generic "off map mats" that players could use to place units just as off map boxes are used.  You could have a colorful flag piece denote the location of that particular off map mat.  That way, any areas with many units could become "visible".  The flag would be sticking up telling players to pay attention to this area, many units are here(look for an off map mat).  Could really help with huge navies, large armies, etc.

Of course the mat would have a corresponding marker to show it is represented by the flag.

Would be used exactly like the current off map boxes...basically allowing for any area to have an off map box if needed or desired.

In no way do I feel the game is in need of improvement.  If this suggestion could enhance the gameplay, great!!!

Hey Mark......I played your game at Gen Con on Friday....Chad(the German player).  Definitely the best WWII game I have ever played.  Even though I lost, it was a blast doing so!  Marty thinks the same as I do.  I certainly am considering buying the game WHEN I can muster the funds for it(must overcome the expected spousal resistance).

Thanks for the great time on Friday!!
