Title: USSR too Strong?
Post by: kriegspieler7 on August 18, 2008, 10:16:44 AM
Greetings!  Glad you're back Mark!
I just got back from GenConIndy.  Had a few players for tS4EnA, but not many.  I just don't have the celebrity appeal that John and Mark have.  And with my ADD and not having a lot of experience playing the game, I'm sure I frustrated a few players.  Anyway, on to the point:  One comment from one of the "newby's" was that after playing the USSR, he hadn't ever played a game with Russia that strong.  Any comment?

I think the players are too used to Axis and Allies.   The Soviet Union consumed probably about 75%+ of Germany's armed forces and won - so having their production at better than 75% of Germany's 1942-43 production to me seems about right.

I think the game is pretty balanced in terms of production - if played well by both sides, the Russian front becomes a pretty massive slugging match between Russia and Germany - which it probably should be.

Then again, for a good German playout, John can think about Eric and his actions at Origins this year.

I tend to agree that the USSR is too strong as well – but only when I’m playing Germany! When I play the Soviets, I think the USSR is too weak…

Seriously, I think they’re fairly balanced. What I’ve seen is that when Germany stays focused on taking out the USSR they will usually (eventually) take them out. Most of the games we've played when the USSR comes out ahead it’s because Germany got distracted and spent too many resources on other fronts.

I do think a slight revision to the rules might be necessary to require the Soviets to keep their border garrisons in place (as with Turkey) rather than just being a negative card draw for pulling troops back. This has started happening in our most recent games and by doing it the Soviets end up being a little stronger in the early part of the war than they should

Yes, I agree - I tihnk the Soviets should not be able to withdraw troops from their border requirements until they are at war with Germany.

if the russians draw troops from the borders - the axis get a turkey roll and Japan is able to attack
