Title: U.S. National Championships (sort of)
Post by: John D. on April 09, 2007, 04:51:48 AM
Ok
Mark and I are preparing to face the CENTRAL U.S. reigning champs, the "Motor City Mortor Team ", on their home turf. They are playing the Allies.

Date: April 21st 2007

At this point Mark and I are still trying to workout the finer details of our grand Axis strategy which we humbly labeled "OPERATION DOMINATION", like who is playing what nationality... :o :P

John

P.S. We are willing to accept challenges from any part of the world, right Mark?

Don't be too quick to place wagers - I usually lose. . . :'(

This is just the Northeast/Michigan semi-finals.  The real U.S. championships will be at either Origins or GenCon - so you will get your shot RandR!

By the way, the European quarterfinals need to be held at some point too. . .Micoom, Christoph, Darkman, Domenico, Domonik, Sleipner, Basiror, Victor. .

I suggest you all go to Micoom's home - he is sort of central   ;D

My record is 1 win and 5 losses, with the one win coming from riding Eric's coattails. :-[

That is not a stellar track record. :'(

Well, it is 2 days to the BIG GAME. Is Detroit ready or what? I understand that they are formulating a grand plan to deal the Fuhrer (Mark) and Tojo (me).

I have already figured out my job as Tojo. I am going to have to keep the Fuhrer grounded. Once he begins ranting and raving and giving orders to move units that do not exist - I will just call 911...  :o :)

I really don't think INVASION USA will occur. That's stretching the Japanese a bit but will concede Hawaii could be lost with a bad series of die rolls by the American player. As for Germany doing the invasion? KEEP DREAMING BABY!!!

Heck, in the Hartford group, last year alone I had five straight losses playing against whatever side Todd was on. And if my memory serves me, Todd and I played on the same side after that streak of five and we lost that one too, making it at least six in a row for me.  Sigh.  :'(

Well, I am still recovering from our knock-down, dragged-out, marathon slugfest here in Detroit over the weekend.

We played from 5 pm on Friday until past 1 am Saturday morning and then played from 10 am Saturday until around 2 am Sunday morning.

That's 24 hours of gaming fun! :o

I have a few pictures that prove that Mark and John actually showed up.

Mark ended up taking the game pictures so you will have to wait for him to post them.  I will also allow him to detail what transpired in the game.

Craig

Picture #1- Axis on the left and Allies on the right.

Starting on the left and going clockwise:
John (Italy/Japan)
Mark (Germany)
Martin (France/Assorted Minors)
Eric (UK)
Dan (USSR)

Picture #2- Axis Brain Trust:

John (left) and Mark (right).

First of all. Very good game! Great playing by the Detroit Allies. Well worth the trip out there (I knew it would be).

I will let Mark chronicle the results of this epic confrontation.  8)

Stay tuned.

Wow - a long trip and a long marathon game - I think a 24 hour game is a new record for us - but it was worth it - had a blast and it was great meeting Craig, Dan, Eric and Martin - a very fun and experienced group of gamers  -  can't wait 'til Origins - you guys better set a couple days aside for the rematch.

Needless to say, the game was an overwhelming Axis victory. . . ::)  I will post the pictures once I have finished doctoring them up a bit more. . . ;D

Spring 1940:  The Germans successfully attack Picardy and Blitz into Paris.  The French ask for an armistice and the remnants of the BEF retreat into Normandy.  The Japanese continue to build up in China and the British re-deploy their navy and the BEF to Gibraltar.  At this stage, the Axis are feeling pretty good: knocking France out with only minimum casualties can go a long way. . .the only negative effect the Germans have suffered is losing the u-boat fleet on the first turn - but that will soon be remedied. . .

1) The Chinese counterattack was a big nothing!  :-[

7 infantry and 1 fighter vs. 2 infantry, 1 armor, 1 artillery, and 1 fighter.

I was hoping to get into some heavy equipment and then run.  Maybe even take down a fighter.

Both sides wiffed!  No damage what so ever!  I ran away. :(

2) The Italians received 2 cruisers and 1 destroyer from the French!!!!!!! :o

I forgot how many things went our way early in the game - getting half the French fleet certainly helped. . .

In Summer, the German's invaded Norway and the Axis Minor's joined the cause

In Summer 1940, the Royal Navy vacates the Eastern Med and the Italian-Vichy fleet moves into position.  In Northern Europe, the Germans bomb London and embark on a massive u-boat building campaign.

What happened to the Grazzianni Line? ???  Prematurely pulling out? :o

"Spoiling Attack" is one of those terms you hear and get a chuckle out of.

Not because it doesn't aptly describe what is going on, but because of the fact that it is one of those terms that must be used all the time in Mark and John's playing group.

It is great to come across little nuggets like that.  That is what playing games face-to-face is all about.  Especially with new players.

The Fuhrer would never concede to a defensive mindset at this point! Il Duce was told to take Cairo at all costs and to eventually meet up with German forces moving southward from Russia into Persia!

The only small detail missing from this plan of genius was enough troops, armor and air to pull it off!  ???  :o

I think the Allies made very few mistakes and capitalized on the ones that I made as Germany.  Having the pictures really helps with the mis-steps that I made.  I should have left enough forces in France to deal with small British incursions - and I was certainly too aggressive in Blitzing on to Kharkov in Autumn 1941 - looking back on it - those two decisions relaly cost me and threw a wrench in Axis progress.

Despite these setbacks - I think things appeared to be stabilizing again by Autumn 1942

All the Eastern Front action ended up being in the Southern sector.  Leningrad was never really bothered.  And while Moscow could have been bothered, it wasn't.

Italy not getting (or at least putting pressure on) Cairo allowed the UK to become a nuisance in France. ;D

Once the US got into the war full time, I had little time to pay attention to what was going on in Europe.

I am glad that you are posting these pictures so that I can go back and view how Dan counter the Germans on the Eastern Front and what Eric was doing with the US forces that I was sending to the UK.

Now everyone will get to see my Northern Pacific thrust with the US and how John reacted to it with the Japanese.

I would also like to note for those guest who are viewing this thread to see how the game went that I didn't actually push with US factories for a Winter '41/'42 Japanese Surprise Attack.  My last factory was going to come in two turns later than the earliest timeline.

The Japanese didn't actually realize that at first.  It took my UK teammate making an offhand comment to bring the Axis to that realization.  It was interesting to see how John reacted to that piece of information.

Utimately, John still attacked in the Spring of '42 since he was in a position to seize multiple VPs.  It did start a discussion concerning the counting of the Japanese VPs in the overall Axis total and whether they had to be at war with WA for said VPs to be counted.

More good pics should be coming with even more amazing action! ;D

At this stage, the Axis goal was to hang on in Europe long enough so that the Japanese might be able to win the game on victory points on their own in early 1945.  Spring 1944:

Looks like a great game !  The Japanese took Pearl Harbour - wow.  It looks like the Germans got stopped pretty much cold on the Russian front tho - that and the Brits invaded France really early looks like it knocked the Germans back on the defensive pretty early in the game.  Looks like fun tho - U.S. Sherman tanks in Berlin in the Winter of 1944 - awesome   :D

What a game!  Thank you Mark and John for coming to Detroit and giving us such a challenge.

These pictures bring back fond memories of that struggle.  As Sir Winston, most of my focus was on the British and the Western Allies in Europe.  Things looked rather bleak for the Allied cause in the beginning as the Germans smashed into Paris in the Spring of 1940 against improbable odds.  It was bad enough that the French gave up so early but 2 cruisers and a destroyer joined the Italians!  That was followed by a brief blitz on London while Hitler started maximum U-boat production.

I'm betting my money on the game's originators!

We from the Detroit group will be collecting all those bets at Origins. :D

Please be prompt with your payments and make sure you have correct change. ;)

I wonder what madness was going on in the Fuhrer's mind during all of this. Maybe we can find his journal or the young lady that was taking his dictations for some clue... ;D

Origins will be here before you know it!  ;D  In the meanwhile I will wait impatiently for a fun rematch! 8)

Yes - I will accept the responsibility for our defeat. . .  :'(

I am still not quite sure on how/where things fell apart for the Axis - especially after the fantastic start we had that Eric commented on above.

My casualties in France were very light and we picked up a good chunk of the French navy. . .

I think I allowed the u-boat compaign to suck in too many of my resources and I got a little over-confident with our early successes and thought he game was as good as won - I will not underestimate the boys from Detroit a second time.

I played less head to head against Yoper - but Eric and Dan played an excellent game - very few mistakes and they capitalized on just about all of mine.  Eric played it very cool with the UK and did not overcommit his resources early. . .I even rolled a little hot against the Russians - and they still stopped me cold.  Definately want a shot at Dan and Eric again. . .

If I had to pick the MVP of the contest, it would be Dan (USSR).

Not only did he prosecute the fight extremely well but he also did a magnificent job of managing his production of the right units.

He was always able to counter-punch the German attacks in such a way that he was never put in an untenable position.

The Germans never broke through the Soviet lines in a way that forced the USSR to fall back.  Dan kept the Germans at a managable position in the Soviet Union so that he retained enough PPs for himself and denied those same PPs from Mark.

Couple that with Eric picking the right times to kick the Germans in the back side and you have a fine recipe for an Allied victory.

Did I not say that I would shield myself from your wrath with some quality players? ;D

I may not be the best player but I'm not stupid. ;)

Man,
Mark and I have got to make up for this one. After getting a chance to review the pics, now our New England group wants a shot at playing the Detroit group. One or 2 may be coming to Origins partly for this purpose... 8)

I wonder what would happen if we lost 2 in a row!? We'd never live it down. :o ;D

Well, you would have to settle for partial revenge since I don't see Dan going to Origins.  That is unless you guys made some ridiculous challenge that he couldn't pass up. ;)

I know that Eric and I will be there.

We could have two games going- one for the people who are interested in learning and one for us to trade blows!

Just a thought.

Ok - I will make a ridiculous challange that he can't pass up. You know Dan - What do I need to do?

Dishonor him? Taunt him? Make fun of his mom? ;)

Maybe money, women or . . .whiskey?

I have to redeem myself. . . I can't sleep, eat. . .when I close my eyes all I see are hordes or Russian tanks - Origins is my only hope. . . ;D

He's Baptist- so no whiskey! ;)

What?  You want a rematch that has you as the Germans again and him as the Soviets?

It would be interesting to see how you go against the USSR now that you have seen how he handles them.  :-\

I think you need to go straight to the source and beg for another chance.  That and pay for his room.  ;D

Vodka would have been more appropriate anyways.

I will check with Dan.

Mark may just have to live with himself for the rest of his life... :'(

Dan has been monitoring your lamentation (i.e.- moaning and wailing) and was inquiring about what my and Eric's schedules for Origins would be.,

My plan is to play your game Thursday and most of Friday, but then go play in the A&A Revised tourney starting Friday evening.

Dan was thinking about coming down Friday morning and then playing Friday and Saturday.

You might be able to convince him to still do that but I won't be available and I don't know what Eric is planning to do with his time at Origins.  He could probably be convinced to play then if Dan is there.

The more the merrier - one or two folks from our New England group are planning on going too (I guess with the hope of being able to play against the "masters" from Detroit (Geesh  :P). . . So I think we will be bringing two games.  ;D

So, the A&A tournament starts Friday evening, huh?  I guess will keep a seat open for you, Yoper,  on Saturday morning then   ;)

Well, that would make sense if the tourney was Single-Elimination.  But since it is three rounds of preliminary play and then the teams with the better records moving on to SE rounds, I will be playing at least until Saturday afternoon.

That should save you some embarassment.  :o

Don't worry you will have had enough of me on Thrusday and Friday that you won't want any more. ;)
