Title: Texas Game
Post by: aordolin on February 18, 2007, 04:01:56 PM
Well this is our second attempt at the game.  We played our first game as more of a test for learning the rule system and such so I consider this our first real serious attempt.  Its just myself (Allies) and my brother Hans (Axis).  Hard getting people to commit at this time but we had a blast.  Hopefully we didnt make to many illegal moves heh.

So here we go!

Hans was kinda Conservative in China so I took advantage by taking a couple of production territories.  Russia finished off Poland.

Axis 4/39  Allies 4/39

Japanese counterattack in China, 5 Allied ships cant sink 1 German U-Boat.  France fortifys for expected invasion.  I decided not to assist them with British units mainly because of the threat of an invasion by Germany.  Axis airpower in Netherlands made attacking the Axis fleet to risky of a move.

Axis 1/40

Axis finish off France.  I made a bad tactical error here I was rolling very well and whittled him down pretty signifcantly but instead of retreating back to Paris I elected for a 3rd combat round in which I got obliterated.  France surrendered.  We made a mistake here because Hans did not have 5 Ground units in Paris at end of turn (he had 4).  We didnt catch this until I was looking threw the photos).  Live and learn :P  I dont think it would have made much difference if I was lucky I might have had 1 more turn with them.  The French fleet though had their BB go Axis while the allies got a cruiser.

Axis 1/40  Allies 1/40

The naval battle took place in the english channel.  The French were successful in shooting down some of thge luftwaffe fighters.  This with some new British Spitfires I was able to win a decisive battle bring down nearly the entire Luftwaffe and sinking all their surface vessels.  The only British casualty was the BB Hood. Rest in Peace!  The brits also invaded western France to grab the extra PP. The Russians took Lithunia.  The Eastern Front countdown begins!

In Asia the Chinese mount another offensive taking back some territory and wearing the Japanese army down before retreating.

Axis 2/40

Hans surprised me a bit here by declaring war with the Italians.  He launched an attack on the British fleet in the Med.  Even though he had me outnumbered I managed to escape the battle with only a destroyer loss.  Both sides had signifcant damage to most capital ships.  Italians also reinforced their positions in Africa while the Germans easily wiped the British out of France.

Germans invade Norway from Finland.  Lack of any Axis naval presence makes taking the entire country this turn impossible.  Germans take the Sinai cutting me off from moving into the Eastern Med again.

Looks like a good game to me so far.  Although I dont see that there is alot of forces diverted to the Russian front.  Who knows though.  And in Africa It looks like this stand off will continue to me unless the westren Africa force can break through.  Cant wait to see more pics.

Looks like a nice start. I received the game last Friday, have done some testing and setup up the whole map, but we will start our first real game Friday evening and the whole of Saturday....

For the Axis turn, have you replaced the Vichy troops in Algeria and Tunisia with Germans? Just noticed, because i'm studying the rules at the moment.

Looks like a great start and sounds like you are having fun!  I realy like your miniatures - is that the Rodney off of Casablanca?  very cool. . . 8)

Micoom - you are right - per the rules, the remainder of the French in Algeria and Tunisia should be replaced with Germans and the Axis are free to reinforce those territories now.

Look forward to the next set of pics!

Mark - yes that is the Rodney.. one of my personal favorites heh.  I went with the Navwar minatures for most of my ships.  I spent about a month and a half painting but I like the result.  The pictures were taken before we swapped out the French units so they will be updated once I posted the Spring 41 turn pics.

Surprise! Japs launch a surprise Summer invasion of Dutch East Indies and Sinapore.  I knew this was coming but the fact that his ships werent in position to launch an attack at the American fleet made me think I had another turn atleast.  My defenses in Indian and Australia are week because of my need to buildup in Africa.  Could be Trouble!  The British moved some people into India and Burma to Fortify those positions.

Axis 3/41

Now this was a disasterous turn for the Allies.  The Germans declared war on Russia and completely overwhelmed them.  The Russians fought a defensive retreat to save as much of their army as possibly and find more defensible positions and wait for reinforcements.  The Italians and Germans launched a sucessful attack on Cairo.  The Brits rolled terribly and Turkey became active.  Pretty much the worst thing that could have happened at this time.

Germans pushes the red army back into the Crimea.  The Soviets are split into too groups with most of their tank formations to the north in Lenningrad.  Hans also counterattacked in Normandy from a small allied invasion in 3/41.  Bad rolling agian made the remaining garrison to small to hold.

Turn markers say Autumn but its really winter :P

Axis 1/42

The Tide starts to turn for the Axis.  They were unable to counterattack the second invasion in france.  In Russia the germans attacked the Red Army at Karkov and had a disasterous result losing over half of their armor.  The Russians took heavy casulities though.  The unsecussfully counterattacked the Russian invasion of Istanbul.  Germans are getting a bit light on troops in Russia as well.

More bad news the Japs were defeated in Burma pretty much eliminating most of their available soldiers in the area.  They still have a massive fleet that is keeping the allies from launching any major operations.

The Chinese are continuing to push back the Japanese in China.  The Japanese are spread to thin to do anything about it.  Americans bring in troops to secure their VP islands in the south Pacific.  Moved alot of airpower into the region.

At this point the game is over.  The Axis ended the turn with only 25 VPs.  We played another turn but I did not take pictures.  Hans still had a sizable army in Russia so we wanted to see if anything could be salvaged for them.  He played very aggressive but he was soundly defeated in Crimea with all his infantry and most of his tanks being destroyed.  At this point it was obvious that continuing any more would be useless.

While I think we both made alot of mistakes I think we both have a better understanding of the kinds of forces that are going to be needed to accomplish certain goals.

Wow,  looking forward to see, if it was a smart decision to not attack the American Fleet at Pearl, but to immediatly invade the East Indies...  The US can bring it's Battleships right into action against Japan now, for it seems..

;D I never saw the third page of pictures before I made my post..  Well it seems it was not wise.. Further this also "proves" that triggering Turkey doesn't mean collapse for the Alies either!! The allied player played super in '42 for it seems.

It looks like you guys had a great game for your first 'real' time playing!  Thanks for sharing the pics   ;D

A couple of observations:
Did you roll the trigger for Siam when the Japanese took French Indo-China?
The mountain territory in Eastern Turkey (Erzerum) is Turkish and you could have deployed your Turks there.
Next time, I'm sure the Italians will try and defend Sicily and Naples - better to fight than surrender with them, right?
Why were the Germans fo focused on the Crimea when Moscow and Stalingrad were so open? Things looked like they were going very well for the Germans in Russia until they got hooked on the Crimea.
Do you have any questions about the rules or observations?

cheers,
Mark

Allies 3/41 The Chinese start an offensive.  No allied pics for 3/41

In the Far East Autumn 1941 pics (message #31, page 3), it looks like the Japanese attacked India using a strategic move or something, which if that is indeed what happened, FWIW, is not allowed. Not that I want to nit pick on rules or anything, but just thought I'd mention/ask about it.

Specifically,  #31 shows two pictures of India, the first photo (with an Autumn 1941 turn marker) shows two Jap ships adjacent to Calcutta and the bulk of the Jap fleet at Tokyo; there appear to be Jap troopships and DD's in the South China Sea, which is three move points from India - they have to move past Singapore to get to India. The very next photo (also with the Autumn 1941 turn marker) shows the entire Jap fleet along with the DDs/troopships having strategic moved adjacent to Calcutta and Japanese troops in Calcutta.  Seems like it should have taken a minimum of two turns to accomplish that move - one move for the distant ships to get in tactical range of Calcutta and the next move doing the actual tactical attack move into Calcutta. Or did I miss something?  Of course, come to think of it, the two Jap ships adjacent to Calcultta in the first photo would have prevented the Brits from strategic reinforcing Calcutta, so the Japs could have had the necessary time to do the strategic move followed by tactical attack movewithout the Brits reinforcing Calcutta.  However, both photos do show the turn marker as Autumn 1941, so it's a bit confusing.  Likely the turn marker just never got flipped or something.

Great photos - really enjoyed reviewing the game.
