Title: Johncon 2010
Post by: John D. on June 19, 2010, 02:24:40 AM
Alright - We're having one of our weekend marathons for the advanced game. Most of the experenced players feel as though the Axis have the advantage. I feel strongly that the Allies have the advantage but they need to be played more patiently. I am playing on team Allied with British Mike and Brian (DeathMachine). We are taking on Mark (the administrator of this site) and Gen Joe (who normally eats grass). We shall see... 8)

I was going to ask when another game was on the horizon.

You should look into have a web cam on during a game like this.  I know that I would check in on the action!

Heck, it would allow me to heckle Mark from a far.  Because we all know how that guy plays! :o :P ;D

I hope that all is well and you guys enjoy your carnage.

To heckle or to play? :D

You know I would love to.  Maybe if I get certain amount of dice towers built and stock up the "gaming" bank account with funds, I could put together a Fall weekend trip. 8)

I really hate to have to do this, but I gotta say that the combo of John, Brian and myself is unbeatable. In fact, if we do NOT win this game, then it is proof-positive that the game is impossible to win as the Allies.

I obviously can't go into details due to the requirements of operational security, but I will say that the strategic formulation, the campaign planning, and the the operational research that the Allied team have undertaken would truly terrify the Axis if they had been present to witness any of it. It is almost a mercy that such a shroud of secrecy has surrounded the details of this effort.

Helmuth von Moltke once said that "no plan survives contact with the enemy," and this saying has come to be accepted as one of the most widely-respected maxims of strategic thought.

Well, he wouldn't have said that if he could see OUR plan!!!

Bring it on, Axis!!

Cheers

British Mike

yeah yeah - just so you know, when Joe, James and I defeat you, it will not be because the game is weighted toward the Axis, it will be because the three of you were out-witted, out-maneuvered and out-played by us. . .

Mike's picture makes him not look all too happy to be part of "team Worcester". . . Mike, if you are that unhappy about being paired up with these two upstarts, you are more than welcome to join the winning team before it is too late. . .

Even if I did want to do that ... which I DON'T - I'm afraid I know too much. There's no flipping sides in this one. Too many highly classified branch and sequel operations that would be compromised.

We set up the board last night. It looks mighty fine, especially with John's new factory pieces!!

Cheers

Mike

Not a question of faith (or a lack there of) in you, it is more about my undying adoration for the abilities of John.   ;)

That man is ruthless!!!!  :o

Whats the spread on this? Instead of points like in football, you use victory city points instead.

I don't need any "points" . . .victory will be mine. . . and for your suggestion to have some sort of a point system, I will hang Stalin from the walls of the Kremlin once it is over :P

Well. . .Yoper. . .I owe you $20  ;D

The Allies defeated the Axis in Spring 1944 in taking both Rome and Paris - as well as pushing the Axis back into Poland and East Prussia on the Russian Front. . .

The game started well for the Axis - defeating France in Spring 1940 and even staging a successful invasion of the UK in Summer 1940 and occupying London for a couple turns before being forced to withdraw.

The u-boat offensive also started very succesful, doing a lot of damage to the British and not losing any u-boats at all for the first 4-5 turns.

Things began to slip for the Axis in late 1941.

Brian had an extremely well planned and executed strategy for Russia, in which he was able to blunt Joe's Barbarossa - especially in the South.  While Joe was able to make good gains, it costs the Germans a lot of production to push into the Soviet Union.

The Allies were able to launch an early Operation Torch in Winter 1941- that, combined with very successful efforts on the part of the Royal Navy in putting the Afrika Korps out of supply for a couple turns, really turned the tied in North Africa - eventually driving the Axis effectively out of North Africa by Summer 1942.

From Summer 1942 on, it was downhill for the Axis.  Joe was forced over to the defensive on the Russian front - though he did manage to take Stalingrad, Maikop, and the Crimea in late 42 - the Germans were effectively stalled in the center and North.

The Russians were able to launch a successful invasion of Finland in 1942 and then drove into Norway - knocking the Germans out of Norway in 1943, when a Soviet parachute corps dropped into Oslo in combined with attacks by multiple mountain divisions.

The Allies invaded Sicily in Spring 1943 and drove into Southern Italy in the Summer.  Kesselring managed to hold them for a couple turns at Naples - but they broke through and took Rome in Spring 1944 combined with an amphibious and para assault.

The Allies invaded Brittany in Winter 1943 and easily broke out to take Paris in Spring 1944 - ending the game on victory points.
