I will guess that the Allies went into Anzio.  Looks like the easiest entry point.

Game Design / Re: Bf 109 vs Spitfire

The two planes were roughly equal early in the war, but were good in different areas- 109 was better in a straight line (speed, climb, etc.) while the Spit was better in maneuvering.

Later upgrades made the Spit much better while the bigger engines added to 109 did little to help an already aging design.  Added weight cancelled out any horsepower gains.

Unfortunately, yes.

We are playing with a Summer '40 buy only turn as our start and then full play in Fall '40.

I didn't pay attention to Martin buying the third transport.  It happens.

By the way you guys remember the very rare entry table from the first version of the game ? :)

We the Detroit Play group have experienced our first activation of Sweden in a game.  After all the of playing the first edition of the game, we had never had Sweden come into play.

So while the UK Home Isles are fully occupied and the Axis have not only Sweden but Spain in the mix, Japan didn't get to launch its surprise strike because the US declared early.  The Axis have one more chance to get Turkey to activate if they can take Mosul and Bushire, which they are close to because Cairo has fallen.

UK is operating on limited funds because of multiple turns of convoy damage, but the US/UK combined Pacific fleet is dancing with Japanese and trying to keep it from moving on Australia and India.  And the Germans are a bit behind on the Eastern Front because of their work in England.  It will be an interesting play out to say the least.

Looks like you guys had a nice table situation.  More than enough space for the charts, etc.  (Though I don't see any dice towers!!!)

Did the venue work out for you?

RULES (UPDATED APRIL 2018) / Re: Corps markers for aircraft

What's with the Bf-109 only silhouettes?  No love for the FW-190?  >:(

Nice unit designation info though.

I don't remember from my reading of the rules for this version how Vichy is handled.  I see a sizable French fleet in the Med.

How is that dealt with in the new game?

It was a great venue. All I can say is that folks stay in good shape with the good year-round weather... :)

I think that it's the other way around.  They stay in shape because they don't want to look bad while out and about in the good weather.

Whatever it takes.

They are Pewter, actually. . .  ::)  and, no, it was not the best pick up line. . .

I have to say I liked Tempe, Arizona - the area around the convention (Mission Street) was full of bars and restaurants.  A very cool area.

Actually, I don't think that there is any line that would have helped you!  Not that I would have done any better. :'(

As for the con location, that was what John Kranz (con organizer) was going for.

While I don't specifically remember the rules and/or ideas that govern the minor activation in the advanced game, I can point out that various explanation bullets on the bottom of the chart are jumbled up.

It would seem that what ever program that you are using flip-flopped different sentences around.  (Or would that be Mark just being Mark?  ;) )  The end of the Belgian Dial River Plan bullet has the words "with Germany" in front of the words "until Belgium is at war".  The same problem occurs with the two Yugoslavian bullets.

And there are various spelling errors too.

Spelling includes the extra "e" in the word "triggeres" up in the first explanation bullet for the Diplomatic Trigger chart.  The word "diploamtic" is located in the first bullet of the lower section and also in the two Yugoslavian bullets.  The second bullet has the word "yoursides" instead of your sides.  The Swedish Ore bullet has the word "provices" instead of the word provides.  Capitalize "yugoslav" in the second to last sentence of the last bullet.

Rules questions from first edition / Re: Air def suez canal
« on: November 21, 2013, 01:37:00 PM »
I would suggest that since there is a +1 movement needed to go from the Red Sea to the Eastern Med., the two sea zones are not adjacent.  As such, air units on CVs in either place can not respond to the other in the type of example you put forth.

That is how we play it.  Think of it this way- you must fly over one of the two land zones on either side of the Suez Canal to get from one the Med to the Red Sea so as to attack a naval unit in those places.  And that then gives answer to whether one can respond either way.  Response air is only allowed on an adjacent territory or sea zone.

The short answer is the Med and the Red Sea aren't adjacent to each other. So no response.

Rules questions from first edition / Re: Turkey

Yes, this last session brought the full weight of the Soviet collapse to light.  The Japanese joined the carnage and the Soviets are down to the two production centers in the middle of Siberia.  That and an OOS Baku.  The Siberia pocket should disappear next time.

Cairo still is holding on since Italy was able to put the western half of the Allied force out of supply before an attack on Egypt.  I did hit for one round to try do a retreat through to the south, but traded four infantry and seven armor for seven armor class units from the Axis.  Next round will probably finally do it, but I am so far behind on getting that done that all other areas have deteriorated.

I didn't drop into France this last turn since it is just ten units that keep getting crushed by the massing Wehrmacht.  Shifted some back to outside Gibraltar for a bit of flexibility.  Will give it one more whack this week and probably call it a game.

As for travel, I need to lay low for awhile on gaming trips.  Got to build up my reserves with the wife before going on the offensive again.

Unfortunately, the Soviets are going to fall here in the next turn or two and it is the middle of 1944.  Eric is wrapping around the Urals and will end up hitting the Chinese soon.

We are ignoring the scoring system and playing out to see if I can still get something done with the Western Allies even though Germans are marching deep into Siberia.  My debacle in Cairo back in 1941 (territory lost and large UK fleet trapped in the Med) has allowed to game to push out farther than the norm but the Eastern Front is finally collapsing while I am just getting into France and still trying to finish off Axis control of the North Africa.  Cairo is still being held by a large Italians contingent while I have just now brought together enough forces to surround it.

Couple that with a heavy hit at Pearl Harbor and the total evacuation of the Pacific by the US, and most of the naval jockeying has been in the Indian Ocean.

Eric maintained a large force in the Caucasus to get the Turkey roll but it took four turns for it to happen.  Those units could have been better used else where had we know that the trigger was no longer applicable.  His units did keep me from taking back Tbilisi, but he wasn't using them to take Baku either.  The Turks were a more worth adversary than my Soviets in this case!
