Rules questions from first edition / Re: New units/rules ideas
« on: September 28, 2007, 03:12:07 PM »
Let's keep the basic game rules simple here folks.  All that is being covered here should be OPTIONAL RULES ONLY.   Maybe there should be packages of optional rules put together and made available.   SUCH AS: package A consists of YADDA,  then B consists of  YADDA, YADDA,  then C consists of YADDA, YADDA, & YADDA, ETC. Then in 5-10 years of putting together different optional rules  John & Mark can put together "WWII THE 'ADVANCED' STRUGLE FOR EUROPE & ASIA".

Yep, I believe I was the proud recipient of that activity too. Early on , the subs just got picked off and were a minor irritant at best for the Allies.  Then the Axis dumped all of them into the Atlantic and the British, for love & money, couldn't hit the broad side of the Atlantic for about 3 turns.

I've seen both sides of the U-boat vs anti-submarine force scenarios in different games and even during the same game where the die rolls were ALL one-sided for several turns even though 2 players were rolling the dice. Historically, the U-boat activity almost strangled the Allied war effort in Europe. So,  the game does mirror that possibility and depending upon production builds & the outcome of some of those battles will dictate the progress of the European theater.

A small percentage of the damaged bombers did make it back. So rolling the dice could be an option to see if it makes it back to its starting point after it's been hit. If so, one needs to spend the 5 production points to put it back into commission. Cannibalization of 1 aircraft to keep others flying in combat is still done today by aircraft maintainers. So this could be an optional rule.

WOW! Japan doing all the invading. Not only does the American player need a good lecture, so does his allies!

Those little bases are also available at some game & hobby stores plus some vendors at most conventions will have some in stock. They can be made of wood, metal, plastic, or a magnetic strip.

Nice concept. Just remember, we're trying to keep the rules simple so it can be played in 1 day. Let's do a what if here. Let's say the British do a night bombing and go back to the LONDON territory.  The Germans decide to bomb the London territory with Stukas the following turn during a daylight raid. Since the bombers were used last night, they can't fight nor can they retreat. Therefore, the Stukas should have an automatic hit if it got through the AA & any British fighters.  Catching enemy aircraft on the ground was always better than an aerial dogfight. You could also do something similar to the attacks on ships to see if the  hit was critical or not by having a die roll done to see if the aircraft was destroyed or damaged by having a 1-4 as destroyed with a 5 or 6 having that aircraft placed back on the production chart where you have to spend 1 turn of production to repair it just like a damaged ship. We can keep adding additional what ifs all we want and that will start bogging the game down.

Strategy Tips / Re: Putting pressure on Cairo and the Suez

Blame Mark for WHAT?  A New England visit in 2008 is totally dependent upon my vacation schedule which won't be submitted until late November or early December. Then it will only cover the 1st 4 months of the year. So the sooner I have details about a convention where you guys are playing, the sooner I'll be told NO, those days are not available. I have 2 items to work with: A vacation schedule and the alternate work schedule. The alternate work schedule means I can get Friday off hopefully which allows getting the additional Thursday off to a whole lot easier. I really can't plan much until the end of the year which probably means paying a higher price as the special prices have past their deads line.

Strategy Tips / Re: Japan--General Strategy
« on: September 04, 2007, 02:52:03 PM »
Japan has to look at getting and more importantly holding the victory points needed to win the game. That means infantry and forts at those KEY locations. I've seen to many games lost due to the Axis having to many victory poiints. The need for fighters, lots of fighters, is the strategic purchase for the Japanese.

It looks like the old 1, 2 punch. Control the Med then whack at Russia hard. If the Med is controlled by the Allies then it's NOT going to be a strong 2nd punch at the Russians. Anyway, I did enjoy the Italian side for my Thursday game and having the British for the Saturday game. One of the next sessions will be to do Japan. I liked the idea of taking the Chinese out of the picture. That leaves more options. I'll still have to do the invasion of Japan just to keep you 2 guys happy. I heard it has been done!!!

I don't know how much storage space you guys have for this program, but you may need to look at releasing some of the older stuff for some topics.

This area is one of the more important aspects of this particular game. Ye who controls the Med can cause a lot of severe heartburn. If the Axis control it then certain triggers will occur which will sway the game and allow the Axis access to some real easy victory points. If the Allies control it, then that potential attack area becomes more easily available and  resources designated for the Soviets are now sitting here. Also, taking Africa away from Italy causes a repetitious die roll to see if Italy is really unhappy about the war. Which they usually are.

It would be interesting to hear from someone who has really reviewed & researched this historical topic. The big picture here is the politics between Germany & Russia plus the logistics. In any case Hitler got to greedy too quickly.
