I have been involved in some naval combats that involved air units and a little trick has been pulled on me several times (you'd think I would learn after the first time).
  I would attack a naval group that included one enemy carrier with one enemy fighter. We would go one complete combat round and I would not retreat BUT the enemy would retreat everything but the fighter, allowing the fighter to try to sink one of my expensive naval vessels (after surviving my AA fire) with out my naval vessels firing back on the enemy naval vessels.
  Now that I have written this, I should not fall prey to this tactic again...
