Reviews / Basic Game review

„Hey, what a beautiful and giant map is this?“

That was the comment of my wife, absolutely neutral or better known for condeming any kind of wargames that I like to play so much (unfortunately for her I own all five Axis & Allies games from Milton Bradley and Avalon Hill  :-* )

Probably I am the first from Europe or Germany to have bought the game in Spring 2006. And like many others I think 1.000 bucks is a lot of money to spend for a single game (even though the map and the more than 1.000 pieces you get are well worth the money). But with so many gaming pieces already at hand (I had already spiced up my games with dozens of GHQ tanks and handpainted soldiers from Revell, Italeri and Hat) I easily figured out, that the map itself would do it for me. The 245 $ I paid included the map, all necessary charts, game manual, control marker (flags), 56 handmade and unpainted fortresses (balsa wood) that Mike made upon my request (they look even great when playing A&A D-Day!) and the shipping to Germany.
After studying the rules several evenings I had the time to set up all the units on the map last weekend.
Some people might be interested to know how to cover all the necessary units. And this game has more than 1.000 pieces if you order the Deluxe edition. Therefore I can tell you how I did it:
Infantry: normally no problem if you own at least two or three A&A games. French, chinese and italian units can be covered by above mentioned companies or by painting (i.e. some blue british units for France, some light grey painted soldiers for italy etc.) A good reference is the plasticsoldierreview.com website.
Armor: Tanks from the MB edition could be used as light (US, Russian) or medium (Germany) tanks, the nation specific tanks from A&A Europe, Pacific or revised could be used as medium (UK) or heavy (Germany) tanks. Still there is a problem for those countries with light, medium and heavy armor (like US and Russia). This can best be covered with pewter tanks from Skytrex or GHQ (a detailed list of units comes up with the map, so you can see where to order what units).
Artillery can be covered with A&A pieces, my AT guns are Table Tactics (from A&A Central Powers) Artillery pieces (machine gun pieces from the same product could be used as well. AA guns are A&A pieces (only if you have two or three copies of it). Katjushas are a must buy from Skytrex or GHQ.
Air units could be covered from A&A MB edition (bombers, fighters) or A&A AH editions (Stukas, Sturmoviks, heavy bombers for UK and US).    Jet fighters are available with the Table Tactics A&A Accessories or you order ME 262s from Brookhurst (for US residents) or straight at tumblingdiceuk.com (for UK and Europe residents). Same is true for the biplanes (Italy, UK and Russia) that can´t be covered with other pieces.
Ships can be covered with MB and AH pieces as well. If you have Table Tactics Accessories it´s even easier, but not necessary at all.
Battleships are nation-specific pieces from AH, cruisers are MB battleships (or AH destroyers), destroyers are AH pieces (or Table Tactics cruisers), transports and subs can be covered by MB and/or AH pieces. Fleet Carriers (can carry 2 planes) are nation specific from AH, Aircraft (for Germany, UK and Italy) and Escort Carriers (US and Japan) can carry one plane each and are those MB carriers.

Depending on how many and what kind of Axis & Allies games you have, pieces for WW2 The struggle for Europe and Asia can be covered more or less with plastic pieces already at hand. Some pieces however must be covered otherwise. To play the game properly, you need an additional 50 bucks for game pieces (some Tanks, Katyushas, biplanes, ME 262 and V2s at least) that you can´t cover with plastic miniatures from MB or AH.

Hope that helps to decide in favour of the game. The map (both quality, colours and the huge number of territories and sea zones on it) is superb! I can definitely give it an AAA rating!

I am looking forward to playing the first game in the oncoming weeks, once the last playing pieces that I ordered are here (and painted). See you then in the After action reports section of this forum!

Greetings from Christoph in Germany

Hey Craig,

Aquarius are the best  ;D Always willing to help other people, i.e. with a quality control for wargames  :D

Would prefer to have a game with you, but unfortunately the Atlantic is quite huge to come along for a game...

Hello Mark,

take your time with that. It´s only one week up to X-mas and I guess you have some other things to do right now. And I never intended to put a wargame map under the tree while it´s time for an armistice ;)
My birthday is the last day in January, perhaps you can make it till then. Would be great.
How about my suggestion of a game piece exchange, any interest?

Christoph

Hello Mark,

did you receive my two e-mails with the order for the basic game and the fortifications? Sent them two days ago and haven´t heard anything from you or John (John@Johns-toys.com). Just let me know and I send them once more.

Best wishes for X-mas,

Christoph

Hey guys,

three answers within a day! Thank you so much. Could it be that you are just as game miniature-addicted as I am  ;D

Looking at Mark´s list of planes except for those early war fighters  of UK, Italy and USSR (I must have those biplanes too!!!) it can be covered with the A&A planes I got. But what about those ME 262 I saw in one of those late war pics. Also one of those must-have items...

I just discovered a german online-shop selling ghq-models. Will be cheaper for me as they don´t charge shipping when ordering for more than 60 Euro (70 bucks). To avoid additonal custom fees I had to split my orders and thus paying more shipping costs (still cheaper than custom fees).

Getting those fleets can wait I guess, but I am curious about the part´s list once I ordered my  basic game.

Anyway, how can I order tumbling dice pieces, they don´t have a website so far (there is a rockband with the same name) and I have no email-adress to order a catalogue (if they have one at all). One possibility would be ordering via John´s Toyshop.

Thanks again for your info,

Christoph

Well Uncle Joe,

of course that´s right. But first Hitler should have come to terms with Britain. Hard to imagine how he could have done that with Churchill. Perhaps by concentrating on the med after the lost Battle of Britain.
At least starting Barbarossa while still at war with Britain was the kind of thing Napoleon tried and failed too.

By the way: Wasn´t the whole idea of Lebensraum a big blunder???

Hey guys,

as I have already beefed up my Advanced Axis & Allies Europe game with lots of GHQ tanks and tons of painted revell and italeri 1/72 soldiers (great US Marines, Paratroopers for US, UK and Germany, Afrika Korps etc.) I think a basic game will do it. Ships and planes come from all those A&A games (MB, revised, Europe, Pacific, D-Day) as well as some Table Tactics expansion sets.
Unfortunately tumbling dice has up to now no website, I just discovered a few photos at brookhursthobbies.com and of course this website. Looks pretty good and much cheaper and more suitable for gaming purposes than GHQ Aircraft (1/285th scale is too big and expensive).
But what really matters is skytrex. No photos at their website (at least for 1/300th scale armor and 1/3000th scale ships). How good is their quality / detail compared to GHQ??? They are much cheaper than GHQ (I guess it´s only half of their price) but as far as I can judge from your pictures here (game design) they look pretty good. Any comments from those that have both GHQ and skytrex armor and ships?

Hi everybody,

after thinking it all over, the most obvious choice is missing: Starting Barbarossa at all!!!

The attack against USSR while still at war with Britain was an unforced error and opening the two-front-war, that could not be won. Of course, Hitler and his generals thougth to have an easy game with a terror-crippled Red Army, that hardly won against Finland the winter war of 1939/40. Nobody expected the quick and decisive defeat of France in 1940. This combination (german victory in France and weakness of Red Army) led to the worst blunder of all: Blitzkrieg against USSR.

tough choice, really... but I voted for the Stalingrad / Caucasus disaster. The Germans never got the oil they were looking for in the first place. Conquering Stalingrad was a stupid idea too. Conquering Moscow and eliminating the bulk of the Red Army that ready for its defence would have been the most important job for the Germans in 1942.
The easy success in South Russia was a result of the mere fact, that the Russian were not expecting it. They thought Hitler would try to take Moscow. By invading Stalingrad and Caucasus, the already thin ressources were spread on a much longer frontline, causing the siege of Stalingrad and the hastily retreat from Caucasus.
Thus my vote for this campaign as the greatest of the many blunders of Hitler...
The other options:
Eliminating British troops at Dunkirk would not have taken Britain out of the war. Sea Lion was never a real option, as Hitler aimed at territories in the East and not at conquering London.
Given the bad weather in early summer (April/May) in Russia in 1941, Barbarossa would have faced big problems, if started earlier.
The conquest of Moscow in 1941 would have been a serious blow to Russia, but remember: Napoleon reached Moscow and still didn´t win. Same is true for Germany, Stalin would have continued fighting as all the factories were at the Urals.
Conquest of Malta instead of Crete: Yep, a big mistake, but even the conquest of Cairo wouldn´t have changed that much as the Allies still could have come back to North Africa via Marocco (as they did with operation Torch). Of course, if Turkey would have turned against Russia, things could have changed seriously.
Failure of sending tanks early on against D-Day. Due to their overwhelming air power I believe D-Day would still have been a success. A bloodier one for the Allies, but once started, there was hardly a way back to the landing crafts.

Just some thoughts on that vote. Curious about other opions.

Hello,

I am Christoph form Germany and some of you might know me already from the forum at Harrisgamedesign.com.

First of all: Fortunately Hitler didn´t win the war. Could he have won it?
Hardly, because his main goal, as already disclosed in „Mein Kampf“, was conquering territory in the East. He actually never wanted the war against Great Britain due to his racial point of views. And even France was only conquered to prevent a two front war that finally emerged.
Underestimating Churchill and Roosevelt was one thing, but the biggest mistake was underestimating the ressources of the USSR. Even if Hitler wouldn´t have declared war on the US, he still had no chance winning against Stalin. Of course the Red Army was crippled by Stalins purges in 1938, but in 1942 the generals in command had learned their lessons and Stalin too. While Stalins generals got more and more commanding powers (i.e. operation Uranus was not Stalins idea) Hitlers generals were replaced more and more by commanders who followed Hitler blindly. After all, he still was the „bohemian private“ as Hindenburg once put it.
Already in 1942 the USSR alone outnumbered Germany in production figures of tanks and artillery, let alone man power. Of course it would have taken more time without heavy US lend lease support (without US beef Red Army soldiers would have had to fight with much poorer rations), but the outcome of the war would have been the same.
The US probably would have thrown more resources against Japan, killing them them first while still giving lots of lend lease support to UK. But there would have been no D-Day and no liberation of Europe. Instead pretty much of Europe would have come under soviet influence, replacing Hitlers oppression by Stalins.
Believe me, I am really grateful that it all went the other way. Changing the course of history is part of the fun playing a WWII game.
But remember: there would be no such game if the Art Academy in Vienna would have taken Hitler as a student. Unfortunately he even failed there...

Just some thoughts...

Christoph
