Strategy Tips / German Bomber Strategy: Anti-Britain
« on: June 21, 2011, 01:51:31 PM »
In Anchorage we were playing with the following optional rules.

Exploding ships. Paras in the mech phase, airbases, war reluctance

I believed that the game way favored the Allie, but have since thought that it favors the Allies but not so much.

I am in Hawaii now, and just finished a solo game.

I reread the strategy advice, and concurred that you need to put pressure on Britain.  Something I have frequently failed to do.

We found that the u-boats tend to go up like kindling.

I decided to try building bombers to help the u-boats, but the first time I tried it, the bombers were shot down by AA very quickly and it was a mess.

Bombers:  If he flies the British naval units against them instead of u-boats, he still only fires a 2, but you get 1 back at him.  Also, you can possibly sink some DD.

I decided to try it again.

I built (GE) 4 ftr, 2 bomber, 1 para, 1 sub and 2 inf on t1, and continued along those lines, maxing ftr’s and 2 subs per turn.  I built 4 bombers and then stopped, so 6 counting 2 at start.ince.

I got 19 inf into Belgium T2, used a mech attack to conquer the last polish prov

Italy builds 1 bomber 1 para t2.  Japan max’s ftr production 1 inf 1 art 2ftr t1, 2 ftr per turn and infantry after that, a para when you have time, and a cv to be ready for Pearl harbor.  I bypassed the PI and went for Australia and India.

Last timeI was unlucky with the Axis, but this time the Axis got a lotta breaks.

IIRC I lost a ftr and a mech in Poland.

I decided to hold back with France and risk the surrender roll, and France surrendered T3.

Sweden went pro-axis.

Things went really well in China, and China was neutralized before pearl harbor.

OTOH.  Despite hitting tons of triggers All I ver got was 2 pts from Turkey.

Ge took Egyt, took Persia/Iraq, allof which was eventually recaptured by the Soviets.

Japan took India&Australia.

Game would have been over in 42, but Japan actually blew a very good attack on Calcutta.  Finally barely scraped it in late 43.

Game ended in Summer 44.  The allies were hard pressed to stay in the game and finally could not make it.  I had piles of Japanese troops on the islands, and that german BB broke through and laned a ton of troops in Norway.  An Italian DD survived long enough to bottle up the central med and keep the allies out of Greece.

I would say the first time I lost with this strategy I had considerably bad luck.

The second time I won a solo game, and had very good luck with the axis.

Any comments on the Bomber Strategy?

What do we do to hurt England?

Suppose all of my opponents Naval Units are dead/retreated, can his air units stay in battle or does the battle end?

P. 25
>If all of the defending units in the battle were eliminated during the previous round of combat, the attacker may not withdraw and is forced to remain in the sea zone. The same rule applies to the defender. If all attacking naval units were eliminated during the previous round of combat, the defender may not retreat and is forced to stay in the sea zone.<

IIRC, the way we played it in Anchorage, when all of the defending naval units were gone, the battle ended and you could not simply continue with air units.

Is this correct?

Does it apply to the defender also.

Above under defending it simply says units, but attacking it says naval units?

What I have is I am about to attack a loan destroyer that is adjacent to a lot of land based air.  So does the battle end when the destroyer sinks/retreats, or will I have to continue fighting the air units until they retreat/die or I retreat?

Rules questions from first edition / Turkey
« on: June 24, 2010, 05:07:58 PM »
If the Soviet Union fails to meet its garrsion requirement for Turkey is this a "Trigger", and so late enough in the game no die roll is made, or will die rolls be made for this even after triggers are no longer applicable?

Strategy Tips / Strategy in the 1941 Scenario
« on: June 05, 2010, 11:12:35 PM »
Creating this new topic.  I haven't played it yet.  Will start tomorrow.

Thinking about Buildin an Italian BB, CA and DD and some German subs.

japan, 5 inf&art art on t1, and guess a ftr, although maybe an AA.

US, thinking ftr sub inf 1 ll

Wondering whether or not building 2 additional US Cv, starting them in winter 41, is a good idea.  Even when I have had just 4 US CV, I have frequently had a problem having enough fighters.

We have rarely seen the German sub position so good this late in the game.

Comments/suggestions.

Rules questions from first edition / 1941 Scenario
« on: June 04, 2010, 09:46:35 AM »
Should Italy have an Inf in one of the spaces of Yugoslavia?

Any strategy hints/comments on this scenario?

Figure I'll try this for a change.  Hoping newer players will find it easier/better, and curious about it myself.

I see England has a Heavy Bomber, but in a 1939 game the earliest they could have a Heavy Bomber is the end of Summer 41?

Rules questions from first edition / Air Transport
« on: December 19, 2009, 01:32:49 PM »
Is it ever possible to Air Transport a Unit more than three spaces away?

Can you move three spaces out without dropping the unit, and then three more spaces?

General Discussion / Find Players/Groups
« on: December 13, 2009, 11:24:52 AM »
Someone in another area suggested create a find players/groups are, and so I did.

Right now I am in Alaska, and we have a group here playing SEA.

But I am moving to Hawaii in a few months unless something unexpected happens.

Any SEA players in Hawaii?

Game Design / Europe versus Asia
« on: October 10, 2009, 01:04:03 PM »
In many of our games Allied players sent evrything to Europe and crunched Germany.  In a recent game I deliberately didn't do that cause I don't like it, but won any way.

In any case, has anyone considered having some sort of seperate allied progress levels that would penalize the allied player if he fails to make progress in a particular theater?

Rules questions from first edition / Allied Bomber escorts
« on: September 20, 2009, 02:36:47 PM »
I've devoted quite a bit to producing Bombers for the Allies.  Probably a mistake.  But it is fall 43 and I get to escort bombers next turn.

On p.13 of the rules:

>Tactical Air Unit Movement
Fighters, Stukas and Sturmoviks have a movement range of 2 and bombers/heavy bombers have a movement range of 3. Allied heavy bombers have a movement range of "4" when conducting strategic bombing missions (only). British and U.S. fighters have their movement range extended to 4 beginning Winter 1943-44 when escorting strategic bombing missions (only). In order to receive this extra movement, fighters must start in the same territory as at least one of the heavy bomber air units.
Fighters taking off from an aircraft carrier have a range of only 1 instead of the usual 2 movement range for fighters.<

Does it have to be a heavy bomber, IIRC the player sheets don't say that.  Could I increase the range of fighters to just 3 to escort a regular bomber, or must it be a superbomber?

Rules questions from first edition / Chinese peculiarities
« on: September 13, 2009, 08:56:39 AM »
Several issues.

China was not conquered, but reduced to a single chinese flagged territory.

We are fairly clear that:

When China, or anyone, has just two adjacent flags, those flags are in supply, because when trying to trace to two flags you can count the space itself if it is flagged.

China was reduced to one flag and could not trace to any US/CW sources.  It had 3 PP left over at the time, does it keep these PP in storage indefinitely?

Various spaces in china are now in supply by sea, but no flagged space.  Howevr, the US/CW could capture a chinese flag, and it would be in supply.  Can china then (in the next turn) use that space to build, place units, collect income?

Would a chinese unit appear in the first initial phase, even though the space is occupied by only US/CW units?

If not, then what happens?  Does the US/CW need to vacate before a chinese unit appears and then the chinese control the space, collect income etc? And would the chinese be able to do so on the turn that the chinese unit appears?

I am the Allied player, and what I do depends on what the japanese player does, although as he pointed out to me, but I was failing to grasp somehow, with my massive fleet/airforce I own the coast and can pretty much take any space I want on the coast of china.

Rules questions from first edition / Naval Unit Placement
« on: September 08, 2009, 06:06:24 PM »
Can a nation build a naval unit in a sea zone controlled by the enemy but not currently occupied by them?  What if they have alternate build locations that are not currently controlled by the enemy; would they have to build there before building in an enemy controlled sea zone?

Also, inter allied cooperation, could the USSR build a unit in a sea zone controlled by the allies, vis a vis etc...?

Rules questions from first edition / Air Units in Combat
« on: September 03, 2009, 11:37:37 AM »
If a player chooses not to add air units into the 1st round of combat, can he add them in later?

Can air units choose not to bomb (to avoid AA Fire)?

So could someone fly defensive air support, but then withold his air units from bombing?

For that matter, could someone withold Offensive air support(without retreating)?

We frequently have a pile of allied fighters bombing a space, and then the german just does not interecept to let them take AA fire.  Could the allies choose not to bomb with some/all planes to avoid AA fire?

When do we count whether or not the Soviet Union has the 100 PP it needs to DoW Japan?

In our case, the Soviets have 100 or more PP right now, the end of the Soviet turn, but if the Germans (me) were to knock him below 100 PP, would this forestall the Soviet DoW on Japan?
